Let's pick up pencils again and draw some 'cutscenes' for SchoolRush to be shown while the level loader is parsing the characters behaviour descriptions again. I had initially planned to recycle those choose-your-difficulty pictures, but the story they're telling shows the pendats defeating the inkjets (comic book's scenario) while I actually need the opposite...

The secret exit

I think I found the way to do it now. I have an enigma on the last level, a clue on the credits if you take the "easy" exit about what you could do to break that "reincarnations circle", and the code to make it work. It could be better, especially in that it is not because we manage to be fast that we unlock the final level in a name dubbed "School Rush". There is a tussle in my mind on whether I should post a few pixels about it or to keep it truly secret as a rewards for those who will finish the game. So far the "keep it secret" side is winning.

Closing level

I've started one more map that will be a playable credits sequence. I've got a few idea of how to make it interesting and fun... let's see if they work in the upcoming weeks (days?)

Climbing level and end-of-game

  • [don't] don't insist on players grabbing "GO" to start playing. Pressing START anytime on the menu screen should work as well.
  • [done] update LEDS so that it crops out-of-boundary monsters when saving -- that should be easier than at loading.
  • [done] unit-test SEDS components and figure out what corrupts .spr files when editting
  • [need] show number of lives and grant an extra life every 100 letters.
  • [need] update build system so that the same controllers and 'guns' code can be shared by runme and games.
  • [wish] Tease players with CJ's "hurry up" theme
  • [done] implement pictures when the last level is beaten to support some story - or show it through some other mean.
  • [done] update libgeds so that GOBs freeze/restore also react to the vertical axis
ps: oops that shouldn't have evaded to the Web so early :-P Well. You may remember I wrote once that I'd like School Rush to conclude in an ascend-the-tower like level. There are a couple of technical barriers before I can integrate that, but none should be a major issue.

Eh!

The idea of "turning off the ink" starts to get real. With some details on the level design, I hope to be able to explain "why is there so many ink here", and "what happened to turn something normal into something dangerous. Time for some more Pixel art ...

edit: Got fair art drawn, but unfortunately, I'm using the few 16 colors (same as the inkjets), which happen to be trashed by the background art in the current code. There is no good reason for this to happen, given that we have now extended palettes (16*256 colors for every individual plane). I'll have some code-digging and potenially refactory time ahead.

Edit: ok. Cork switch closes the level. It doesn't let you see ink draining away from the pipe, though.

Down in the Ocean ...

My brother asked me some sketches for re-painting the fish-themed bedroom of char*ly. He wanted it with a Bilou-drift so that our favourite hero could be seen swimming along on the walls. I already had some funny characters that could have been injected, but for Bilou, I wanted it to be something more than "an ocean zone, that is underwater" ... fish that can depart from the ordinary fishes, because that's what Donkey Kong Country has already done. And he wanted something more child-friendly, that doesn't trigger any nightmares.

Since my brother is much into music, I somehow came up with the idea of transforming musical instruments into underseas inhabitants ... the french name "Piano à queue" for the Grand Piano may have helped ... or maybe that's just the harp-shape of hippocamps. Anyway, I've got my design and I like it.

And only when I'm done, he comes back with the office's iPad and show me the brilliant, indie-developed Squids RPG/strategy game from the Game Bakers... which happens to take place under water as well (not that surprising ;)

Although the interactions and goal is pretty simple, they managed to keep me playing until the end of the demo (that is, the point where you're prompted to purchase more characters) thanks to that lovely graphics they have. The OST is sure great as well, but it's just harder to focus on the game music with kids playing all around. At some point, I paused the game and picked my pencil to note some graphical tricks, some underwater plants I found interesting, and so on.

edit: pencils have finally discarded some sharp-harps and twisted me towards saxocamps instead. I've got other folks that look like whistling-fishes. Cymbal-manta-ray didn't make it.

I think I at last managed to turn the two words "lost temple" into some interesting and original design idea for both monsters and area look. I have studied art of Rayman and Shantae closer, sketching some original derivative here and there, keeping them secret until I'd have something coherent -- although it isn't pixel art and certainly not a playable demo yet. But let's face it: how would a playable demo "protect" my idea better than a sketch ? It's not like I was trying to win a race with a competitor here, not willing to let X know what I'm doing. Sure, I don't want the idea to be ripped, but I can't prevent someone else to do the same. So I bet my best defence is to do it publicly.

But anyway, just look at that "golem" thingy, animated by the berrybats vines (with berries too young to turn bats :) -- *that* will put you into trouble when you'll play the level ... well, if you manage to find the level in the final game, because it's not called "lost" temple in vain. Trust me: I won't reveal you the slightest bit of information on how you'll get there.

Have fun.

Deep Ink Pit: "Backstory"

Well, this is not exactly "necro-posting", but yet, these pictures were waiting in the "draft" subjects since May 2010 ^^" ... and they were likely drawn from a long time ago by then, since the chose-your-game poll of January 2010 was already featuring the concept of Deep Ink Pit. And I know these small sketches, between design document and comic book, were drawn as the concept of the Deep ink Pit was forming in my mind.
I bet that's the best I can do tonight to make you forgive me for being so much overwhelmed with work that I can barely give you a blog update ...

Bo - Look. This is an ancient map of the planet we've landed on.
Bi - Yep, it's curious that they had technology to build teleporters, but still named their lands along some primary elements such as "Fire", "Water", "Green"
Bo - I wonder what these "pyramid" and "turtle" places could look like.
Bi - Feel like doing some exploration, at last ?
Bo - Don't be stupid ! Archeological curiousity has nothing to do with your "exploration" stuff!

So here's the first attempt on a synopsis. There are still many "placeholders", but fire, technical, water, sky, temple and stuff found their place. Last time I did such an attempt on "game design", it was for the "Rock Story" lost project, which my brother never found interesting. In some sense, the "willy-inspired" game map sounds like a better tool than Donkey Kong Country-inspired "world maps".

This was not exactly "the very beginning", but that's the closest we have preserved from that beginning. Somewhere at the end of 1994, there was a video-game design contest where the first prize was to have your game realised by a professional team. It definitely motivated my brother and myself to get some real "design documents" written. This is how the first ever storyline for "Bilou's Adventure" was written. Funny enough, by that time, Bilou and Bouli were initially humans that got lost in space. They're unfortunately approaching a mysterious planet and get hit by a "beam" that both attracts their ship and crash it on the surface, but also turn them into "strange aliens" : a blue ball and a yellow stick.

This is where the 7 "magic stone" initially appeared (influenced by Sonic's chaos emerald ? who knows ?) : they're the key to get back to your old self again, as you probably don't want to stay a blue ball for the rest of your days. I totally droped that part when writing down the comic in 2000. Bilou and Bouli *are* aliens, they don't find themselves "strange" and they are happy to be a ball and a "stick".

This has led my brother to start sketching levels for the Green Zone -- and not only sketching them, but also describing them, giving hints on the ennemies movement patterns, gameplay etc. It was full of fun (but impractical for me) ideas such as "stop the pollut-o-matic so that you can enter the river safely", floating, walking and flying bumpers, etc. On my side, i of course had to bring flesh to the bones, and visuals to all of those funny "special powers" that my brother had in mind. "flying", "diving", ... have seen a couple of animations sketched.

Somehow, after the School Zone (which was deeply influenced by Pierrick's sketches), it seemed that my brother had his focus moving away. He just recycled levels of our very first video game "Calimero Against the Black Empire" that i hadn't completed : pyramid zone, water zone, computer/techno zone and the "pipe zone" full of warp pipes and pirhana plants ... hum.

It's fun to think that this era is where i initially introduced Bouli in the game. Bilou was there for a long time ago, starring Pierrick's games as "a blue ball named Bubble". I somehow tried to make him look "opposite" to Bilou, unconciously using warm colours where Bilou was all of cold colours, being long and slim (mimmick'ing memorable duos such as Laurel&Hardy or Jack&Elwood) while Bilou was all round. Even his "mood" was different. Bilou started being fast and a bit "impetuous" while Bouli has that kind of "Zen Attitude" that suits the engineer of a revolutional spaceship -- Bilou being instead a talentuous pilot. Think about it: if things had not turned out that way, you might have seen Bouli dubbed "Superabbit" and Bilou might have been blue and magenta with some punk hair...

storyline (t.a.g.)

You've reached the oldest "storyline" post.

These posts talk about the development of the background of "Bilou's Adventure" game, e.g. the addition/refinement of which zones the world will offer to explore, etc.

It contained some historical elements, although there's more history than just presenting the storyline (the story was pretty much missing in the '94-'96 16-bit prototype.
