My brother had a fascination for maps back in '93, so I should not have been surprised if one of the first documents he brought me after we decided to rename the 'buble' character 'Bilou' was a world map of the games' big adventure.

And on the back of that world map, there was a set of sketches for the games' introduction sequence ("magic" stones get scattered during a space shuttle crash), the main menu screen, and so on. Unlike in previous documents, the character is already identified as 'Bilou', and we are 'PPP Studio'.

There are a few interesting similarities between that map and the ones from the original Commander Keen trilogy. Notably the abundance of world map teleporters and an early-visible area that requires a swimming upgrade to be visited.

Compared to other maps of the game, the school zone appears quite late in this proposal, and the final boss is "catvador", the evil ruler of the Black (sic. we meant dark) Empire recycled from Calimero.

Design Stories by Juicy Beast

Lately, I've been reading through the posts relating the design of "Toto Temple" by Juicy Beast studios. I especially focused on "Designing a “playable” UI that secretly teaches how to play" and "evolution through iteration" posts, in which the author meets my own "no tuto" guideline.

In their game, going without a tutorial phase means that anyone can easily join the game (a 4-player catch-the-flag) without having to be taught the rules first. Because they're doing play-testing at conventions, it also means that people can play together without requiring a "game owner" to explain them how to play.

Coming this summer on OUYA, Xbox 360, WiiU, PS4 and Steam.
Another interesting similarity with my own games so far is that they dropped abstract menus-with-cursor in favour of a game interface where everything (selecting your level, teaming up, etc.) is manipulated with the game's own controls. Stickers on those screen will tell you to use X+<=> to hit the next/prev level buttons, for instance. Meanwhile, you can hop and dash just like what you'll do in-game.

PS: I've also read through the more "technical" posts on platforming. They were essentially working around oddities of the collision engine of Unity and detailing how the "raw", analogous input of the directional mushroom are converted into impulses through pre-processing rules such as "if the mushroom gets at rest while we're approaching a cliff, let's step on the breaks and avoid falling". ...
That sheds (yet) another light on those thousands of lines of code just to control the behaviour of Rayman (Origins).

Thanks for sharing, Alex. ^_^

Rush to Completion -- 2 levels

Finally, it's here! Bilou: Rush to Completion with two levels (you're allowed to expect at least 2 more by the end of October). But don't let yourself fooled: every time you'll beat those levels, the pace will speed up and the ink will raise faster, forcing you to find new path through the level and to improve your skills if you don't want to drown.

Oh, don't let the interactive menu trouble you. Default way to start the game is jumping into the inkjet on the left to grab the "GO" letters. Catch the blue ball on the left if you want "kids mode" and explore the levels with idle ink. If you manage to grab one of the "ARGH" letters without touching the blue ball, you'll enter "hard" mode, with ink raising faster straight from the start.

Oh ... and you can "keep running" by holding the R shoulder button.

Known bug:
  • pressing START in-game will likely crash
  • hint for running on the welcome screen are obsolete.
  • wrong colors in the "heal" bonus.

9-18 days late

Oct. 9
That's it! level map is complete, monsters are placed and they behave as expected. I have two more "special blocks" to define for horizontal pencil spikes (83) and level exit (21). We can break through the "pencil barrier" that lays between the upper and the lower part of the level. Pencils are not the best item here, but I haven't found something that would make more sense. Maybe something made of glass ?

Now the focus shall be on the glu code that will make SchoolTest being more than a test, but something that looks like a playable level.

Oct. 12

Don't expect anything before 16th of October: IRL interference. However, the welcome screen is now ready, and I have good basis to invite you to progress in the level :) If only those ink droplets could be made more ... visible...

... moving some ground tiles on the BG layer, maybe ?
^^"

Oct. 15

Final touches here and there to make sure there is no hidden trap or non-working bonus. Rewards picture render better and ***drumroll*** I gave the soundtrack a first (successful) test. You should get a release end of the week.

Oct. 17
Fixed a "last minute panic" bug, allowed Bilou to throw Bladors even when jumping or walking and reverted bonus to latin script. I'd say it is mostly done. I'm essentially waiting for CJ's (or Πk's) soundtrack... and I still have to realize the "howto" background to explain how to grab and jump etc.

You may expect the release to take place this week-end ^_^

Oct. 18

Everything you need to know gathered on the welcome screen. The rest is to be learned by playing. I hope that doesn't make it too cluttered.

Meanwhile, my brother sent me a nice tune to populate the soundscape. I'll integrate that and release tomorrow.

How to play ...

Let's forget about instruction screen, start menus and fancy credits/highscore things. People will need to know how to play, and I don't want to spend weeks on secondary artefacts. On the other hands, I know how the homebrew distribution channel works: people won't get README file nor will they know where the game comes from unless it's included in the binary itself.

Here comes a simple way to achieve those goals : a spelunky-like "level 0" where the background has hints scribbled on it, and where you can experiment with basic moves or start the game. I'll just have to ensure my bros. don't end up stuck on the level 0 as he did in Still Alive DS :P
