bubsy

I think I was 20 years younger the last time I need a SNES gamepad to press start on Bubsy title screen. After a month of training, I was able to reach world 4 and found a few 2"continues". I couldn't beat the level 3 last week-end, but at least I got the confirmation that Bubsy "claws encounters" is a fun game.

It might be the only fun thing made with that character (I do not expect much of Black Forrest's "woolies strike back"), it may have arguable pixel art, the tunes are catchy, the atmosphere is playful, the character is fun, and there is enough variety in the level design to keep us entertained.

It is clearly difficult and sometimes even frustrating without becoming utterly unfair or boring. As far as I've played it, it is challenging.

It is far from being a masterpiece in terms of game mechanics, though. The air control is sometimes a bit awkward, lacking precision, and the "GLIDE" mechanics isn't always sufficient to save the day. But what really seem broken is what happen when you jump off a slope. First, you don't move purely upwards (if standing), but slightly backwards on a climbing slope. You'll have to compensate that with more air control. I've never seen that happening to any mammal in the real world, presumably because we feel the slope and compensate when jumping. But I can accept it: it makes sense from a pure physics perspective, and it echoes a similar mechanics in Sonic. What is broken is that if you then release the directions pad, you will find yourself pushed backwards again!

Old notes: - catchy tunes, non-repetitive, give the same kind of thrill than LOCO64 where you want not to die so that the tune keep evolving rather than being rewind to its original position.
- ridiculous, toon-like animation. They //somewhat// reduce the 'infograme' effect of dying over and over on the smallest (and impossible to foresee) hazard

Its all sketched in the book!

early bugs to be caught.
Don't you dare thinking I'm using the BmxExcuse to pause School Rush development near completion once again. Here's the proof: a few more lines of code (with plenty of hard-coded magic values to bridge with the game logic and assets, I confess) and I get those illustrations on the bottom book updating as Bilou gets and loses power-ups. Even better: as she picks up bladors, the player is hinted that she could throw them at pendats, which is the way to get power-ups.

Now all I have to do is to switch to that bookmark-health-bar because the raising black rectangle ridiculously obscures now-crucial gameplay feedback.

  • tu tiendrais mieux dessus si tu t'accroches

This week-end featured some social beta-testing session with kids between 7 and 15, including the S-team. Compared to earlier release of the game, the power-ups were much more used and seeked by the players. The "straight-throw" mechanism was set as default throw and it pleased the players. Only the eldest player asked me how the former "ballistic-throw" could be achieved and used it in a few place when short distance was preferred.

I take note that young players will tend to stick on "pick up bladors" even though they gathered a BigPunch power-up. With the current mechanics, however, they will stun the blador again and again with no effect, wondering why they can't pick up that blador now, getting closer, and completely missing the facts that blador's feet are getting dangerously near. When the blador finally wakes up, odds are high that Bilou will be recovering a BigPunch blow and that he'll get hit by the blador's move, no matter how fast they spam the B button. I think this stems for BigPunch invoked by a Double-B mechanic while single-B remains "pick up" through the whole game.

The alternative would be to ensure that punching a stunned blador means you pick it up. It sounds both more perplexing (you lose the mechanic's individuality, which is an important factor of cleanness)

  • [how?]
  • [done] Passage à FLOAT automatique quand Bilou obtient le Power-up FLOAT
  • [how?] quelque-chose de similaire pour BigPunch
  • Indique l'état des power-up sur le "HUD"
  • [done] Eliminer les Pendatz en mode "dizzy".
  • Donner une utilité aux bonus à récolter.
I played some School Rush this week, and read back scribbled notes to isolate todo items I still have to address. Many of these are related to the power-ups, the way to ensure their state can be understood by the player and to have coherent behaviour accross the game.

I would like to augment the GameScript class, too -- the level parser -- with a "reload()" method that would keep the state machine structures, but reload maps, evaluate expressions and reset GOBs to their scripted positions, so that we can efficiently retry the level when the player failed.

I also analysed the layout of my two first levels. I want to add a layer of collectibles that would give gameplay hints:

  • you can pick up a stunned blador
  • you can throw bladors at pendats
  • you can ride spongebops
  • have you tried to throw a blador in spikes ?
  • bladors can un-wire spongebop
and in the level 2:

  • hold (A) and you'll float at the top of your jump
  • big punch can defeat pendats
  • DOWN + (B) let you grab bladors although ou have Big Punch
  • sponges do float
  • bladors can stun inkjets.
The idea would be to have it look like a star-coin in NSMB, but also reveal a small drawing when discovered.

Floating ... design notes.

I have the setup to generate pseudo-random item when stunning a pendat. I took some time this week-end to think about what were the barriers to the adoptions of these power-ups are. It make me re-consider the pause and animation when Super Mario gains powers. To be reliable, it's important that the player can keep track of whether he has the power-up or not ... which was so far an abstract counter. I think it could also be important that one finds, in-game, a "free" power-up, whithout having to stun a pendat -- especially given that stunning pendats with bladors is quite difficult. Being able to have hint on what pendat will release could help, too ... Although it would require much work to reverse the monster engineering.

And for the fun, I used a similar sunshiny hour last week-end to select the way power-ups are released, and how they interfere with Bilou's behaviour. The current trigger to start floating is now a double-tap on the "JUMP" button. This may not be mis-interpreted as a bounce-to-be on an eraser, a monster or whatever. And this remains ergonomic enough.

No floating for the S-team

They are N (14), A (13) and L (9) respectively. They have been asking for news about Bilou everytime we meet since about 5 years, now. At first, they would quickly ask me for another game, but nowadays, they will barely wonder whether there's something else than "School Rush" on my DS. They are the S-team.

I got quite surprised by how they reacted to the introduction of power-ups in the game, though. They essentially didn't care. They were focused on trying to beat the game at "normal" difficulty level. For that, they need to RUN, JUMP and GRAB from time to time. They are quite happy that ennemies are mostly things to avoid, apparently. They're not trying to take them out: that would simply expose them or slow them down. They welcome avoided battles.

I chatted a bit with A about how I was surprised by her decision to ignore interplay with ennemies altogether. She replied she was focusing on her target. She had no time to toy with monsters: she wanted to beat the game.

Admittedly, doing a float-jump is quite demanding at the moment. You need to grab and carry a dumblador (that's quite easy, but may somewhat slow you down in some levels). Then you need to approach and dispatch a pendat with ballistic shot. With some luck (3 times out of 4), a power-up will be released, but you need to move without taking a hit until you reach the place where you can use it. Then you must remember to press (Y) mid-air -- and not during the ascencion phase of your jump -- to activate floating. Meanwhile, nothing is there during RUNs and JUMPs to remind you of your new power.

Bringing the game from 1.2 to 3 buttons is not a complete stranger to the issue. I recall those locations in Super Mario World where you had a vertical wall to break were leading me to misuse actions a lot. Would there be a mere goomba moving towards me in such a place, my chances to beat the levels within 3 lives became fairly slim. The reason was I would only play occasionally. I couldn't really learn where is which action with my bones. That would remain some "err... which button does what, again ?" as soon as I need to use more than "the one under my thumb, and the one just next to it".

For the next time, I will try to find some solution with e.g. double-(A) pressing. We shall see how L -- who has a more exploring gameplay -- will react.

Float and Land

Knock, Knock! My godson steps in. He's a long-time fan of Bilou and we have plenty of points to discuss. I want his feedback on the improved collision areas and auto-pilot for riding spongebops. But it is also the opportunity of building together the gameplay of the first power-up. I had the script for releasing bouncing items when a pendat is dispatched written earlier in the week. I have bare bones for slowing down Bilou's fall ... let's get crackin'

Converting 'speed reducing spin' into some dedicated 'float' state for Bilou's behaviour works quite well, but mashing the L shoulder button doesn't allow us to use it when it is most needed. It would have been natural to press (A) again mid-air to trigger the float, just as in Rayman (PSX) or Mario 3 / Mario world. Unfortunately it doesn't work well with eraser bumpers. Something similar occured with Rayman 1, when using spring-clouds. pressing the button a bit too early would make you float instead of being thrown up in the air. I settle on holding L button, but this will have to be confirmed tomorrow by the S-team.

GobAnim::isJedi()

jump, twist and roll!
That's quite amazing, how I manage to postpone an upgrade of the game engine for days and then have two of them implemented in a couple of hours simply because I used doxygen-on-cybook to brief myself on what's around and what is the most straightforward path for implementing them. I have now a way to instruct that a specific transition animation has priority over the running one, which is mandatory for your "air-grab" to have any visible effect when you're turning back or reaching the top of your jump -- in a word, for a consistent behaviour. It also allowed me to give "float-land" a first attempt.

If you feel so, and especially if you have played Bilou: School Rush a few times, I'd love you to vote for the following nominated power-up candidates. Writing them down, and given the short length of the game, it would likely be cheap if these were permanent power-ups. I rather see them as "consumable" powers, e.g. you could have 3 throws, 5 float and 1 pound left.

Default throw fits physical laws by making bladors fall. Bilou throws them at an angle of 45°, making it a mid-range weapon that's demanding to aim, like Worms' grenades or DK barrels. Straight Throw switches instead to Blues Brothers' like weapons, where the blador is moving faster, perfectly horizontally, and at constant speed until it gets off-screen. The counter-part is that when you miss your target, your weapon is gone for good nonetheless.

Air Dash and Ground Pound allows you to reclaim control from gravity. You should have fallen, but you're allowed for a short distance to follow a straight line by pressing a single button. You should have been waiting to reach terminal velocity but you get it instantaneously, and get rid of that annoying horizontal speed for an accurate land. Wall Kick, finally, is a twisted version of Air Dash, that can be chained (more open along time), but is restricted in space (only along walls).

Remember Apple Assault ? "Big Punch" is the intermediate weapon you could receive, that dispatched apples at safe distance, with a massive move. Here, it could stun pendats and recto-verso jumping erasers without requiring you to carry bladors around.

Super Powers as sketched in Summer 2014.
Maybe you'd rather float safely to that next book rather than rely on a timed jump ? That power-up is for you, raccoon friend ;)

Last one, the Wide Grab, is for all those who'd love to catch big air with a spongebop, but typically miss their (B) timing. Wide Grab would double your grabbing hit box. How couldn't you love that ;)

Mechanics (t.a.g.)

This is a term I borrow from Kirby Kid -- aka Richard Terrel.

Mechanics are the player initiated actions from controller inputs as designated by the game designers. These actions have effects on the gamestate in terms of the variables and dynamics of the gameplay system

.

In fact, if we consider that gameplay is the part that defines and rules interactions between game elements based on user inputs, mechanics are actually atomical element of the gameplay.

I'm mostly building platformers here, so my primary mechanics are JUMP and RUN. I can modulate them with FLOAT. I don't quite have a shooting or fighting character, but it instead GRAB and THROW things.

As you have noted, I use all-caps when I want to obviously refer to gameplay actions (mechanics) within the text. I promise I won't shout too much.
