There. Now bangbash is bashing too ... That was a "requirement" from my son, and tonight was dad-and-son evening, so after suggesting he could read the 'gobscript' entries of my notebook (bujo?), after cleaning up animations with AnimEDS and my Nintendo DS (and telling him that, yes, those are programs I wrote myself too, and no, that Nintendo DS is not modified in any way, only the game cartridge it uses is special), came the time to put that together on the PC.

He has been pretty attentive and quiet while we were going through the steps of 'animation plays, but nothing happens' and 'will you stop bashing, now ?' ... and of course he then asked for the ability to dispatch bangbash with a blador, which wasn't too tricky to do either. Bed time, son: making sure we cannot simply zoom in front of Bangbash will be for another evening ;)

On y est !

Enfin !

Ciao tutti ;)

Finally ... Finally, I've got my bouncing branch working with the intended "furblock" physics. Almost everything else is said in the previous post, and you also have a download link there to try the physics on the original furblock ... But this has taken so long, I wanted it to have its own post.

edit: there was a little issue left: if you watch the animation closely, you'll note that the branch makes an extra wobble one time, and no such thing on the next time. It wasn't intended at first, but it felt nice when happening, so I made an extra "smaller wobble" animation to use as a transanim in the "throw->idle" transition. But it still had that odd/even behaviour, doing it only every other time. It turned out that when Bilou lands on the branch during a transanim, it did not reset the transanim flag. This is a desirable feature when making transition animations for Bilou mid-air, but not here. there's an extra anim2.force script line I can add to say "this animation (big wobble) may interrupt any ongoing transanim", but its implementation was apparently broken. Should be fixed now.

edit+: OMG. I just stumbled upon the original bouncyBranch.xcf discussed in the first post... timestamp is 24-08-2020 ^^"

It's been a tough month. Let me tell you, when release-day came out on 24th, packing a binary with some new stuff to offer to you all was the last thing I had in mind (just before I'd fell asleep. Or maybe just after). But I still managed to improve a bit the undead-cell graphics, mirror the animation and give it a state machine so that it can be placed in levels. It isn't interacting with anything yet, just checking whether it should turn back at the edge of platforms, but there it is. You can practice tricky jumps if you feel so ;) The downloadable .nds finally made it to the Internet.

Let's dive in: the last demo was nice, but it sure felt awkward to have the water behave as a solid platform. I suppose it's a mandatory to-do item before I release something new: make sure the water feels more like water. It will be perfectible, of course. I don't intend to make it look more like water at this iteration, but at least ensure that I can detect when Bilou is entering water and make him act differently. And that is slowly getting in shape...

trivia: the animated gif above is about 100KB. The one I initially captured was over 1.5MB due to scrolling. I had to create a 'dontmove.cmd' object and give it the focus so I could capture the proper sequence. If you look carefully above the water surface, you can spot it.

There's one thing I'd like to get fixed soon: when you reach back the surface, you're stopped straight. That should not happen, but I do not seem to be able to fix it with a transition. This is a job for a revived "muad-debugging" session: it would let me see step by step why no transition is taken by re-playing the think() function after I detected yspeed == 0.

edit: I'll have to write a dedicated 'in-water' controller: hacking with 'increase' and 'freemove' doesn't produce anything convincing even after freemove is fixed so that it fails at the surface.

I tried several ways to get the right sound effects for Bilou: School Rush, and I ended up with the following observation: it must be tested both against the background soundtrack and against the in-game timing (and possibly the look) of the action. On the other hand, I'm not convinced that "playing" it is actually needed. So, following the advice of my brother, I captured an avalanche of animated gifs to be used as basis.

Given the real-life interference of the last days (Brussels attacks seems to have damaged my laundry machine), this will be my birthday-gift-to-the-Internet for this year... but I now have all the pictures I wanted to implement the "difficulty selection" bottom screen, and I should have that built somewhere next week.

Berry Bat Things

Hey, there! Cleaning up and tuning in are done. If you enjoyed once AppleAssault, but then stopped playing it because you didn't feel the challenge anymore, here's an update that you might love: AppleAssault -- BerryBat Things. The idea is simple: you've got limited time to clear up a level. As long as you punch applemen out of the arena, nothing bad will happen... But if you get lazy and that the applemen count remains the same for too long, a berry bat will come and tease you. You could manage to get rid of it, of course, but then another one will come soon, and then again another and another, again and again until you surrender (or focus on punching Applemen, after all).

So how comes you're still reading this ? Go and download it! -- oh, wait. Better pick the final release

Bilou!

Action!

Oh, and btw, make sure you're voting for the "success" of the new features in the side panel if you've played to v1.4 as well ;)
